Projects in Taricaya:
FLORA AND FAUNA STUDIES: Every year the biodiversity within the Reserve is studied to better understand and preserve the flora and fauna in the area.
AGROFORESTRY AND CAOBAS PROJECT: In 2001 an agroforestry system began on a 2000 m2 plot as an example of sustainable agriculture and reforestation.
You can see how the mahogany, cedar, flowers and tropical fruits have grown to create a productive forest that allows the recovery of the area and its sustainable use. The project seeks to provide a sustainable alternative for land use to local communities.
TARICAYA RESCUE CENTER: Since 2004, wild animals have been received from the local authority that have been confiscated from people who took them out of the forest. These animals arrive injured, sick or malnourished and enter a rehabilitation program to give them back the necessary qualities to be able to release them back to their natural habitat, promoting the recovery of local fauna.
OBSERVATION PLATFORMS: In 2005 the CANOPY WALKWAY was built, a 90m suspension bridge up to a platform on the top of a 300-year-old Lupuna, at 45m, the highest natural observation point in the jungle. The staff and volunteers use it as one of the monitoring points for birds.
TARICAYA TURTLE PROJECT: In 2006 the Turtle Repopulation project began
Taricaya to save this endangered species. Local people extract the eggs for consumption and sale. The staff and volunteers collect the eggs between July and September to plant them on the artificial beaches in the Reserve until they hatch between October and November and then release the turtles to their natural habitat.
BUTTERFLY PROJECT: In 2010, the butterfly farm was created to learn about the biology of these animals and to manage them sustainably as an alternative to using wildlife for commercial purposes.
COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT: Since 2001 we have been working with various local communities, including the Juan Pablo Farmers Association and the Native Community of Palma Real, in environmental education and natural resource management programs.
COLLPA DE LOROS “CACHUELA”
4:00 a.m. From our ranch we will embark on a boat that will take us to our destination “la collpa de loros”. We will cross the Madre de Dios River for approximately an hour and a half, on the way we will be able to appreciate varieties of flora and fauna, specifically diversity of birds in dynamism with nature and a beautiful sunrise.
At 6 a.m. approx. Arriving we will locate ourselves in a strategic place at a prudent distance to wait for the arrival of various species of parrots and hopefully macaws; especially you will have the opportunity to observe the blue-headed parrots, auroras, parakeets and some birds of other species as well. In this place, the clay has mineral salts from which these birds feed before carrying out their common activity in the jungle, such as feeding on fruits and others in order to neutralize the toxins from the ingested fruits. This activity lasts about 1 hour, it is the time you will have to film and take the best views, contemplate these beautiful and interesting birds accompanied by a beautiful jungle sunrise.
Around 7:00 in the morning we will be returning to our hostel to have the last breakfast and then we will go back to the city of Puerto Maldonado.
